Herbicides are specialized chemicals that are able to only kill Milfoil and plants similar to it and letting the other native plants grow. In some areas along the shore people cover the water with a tarp so that the milfoil cannot get any sunlight, killing it after awhile. Another way is to cut them up with machines, it is possible hire underwater mowing companies. Since the plant can grow from just a piece of it this can actually lead to more Milfoil if the cut up pieces aren't gathered out of the water. Similar yet less effective, it is also possible to pull them out by hand. This should only be done if you're trying to temporarily remove it from a small area.
